Who remembers Black Forest cake? I have absolutely relished this cake growing up, it was my birthday cake for years (and I’m sure that’s the case for SO many of you)! What do I recall when I think of this cake? Party hats, balloon piñatas filled with candy and toys, samosas and chips on the party menu, friends and family gathered around the cake – topped with lit candles, as I made a birthday wish and mom and dad would help me cut the cake. Good times! 🙂
With this recipe, I’m bringing the magic of this nostalgic cake into one of my favorite breakfasts – overnight oats. I love how versatile they are and how easy they are to make. These Black Forest Overnight Oats are deliciously creamy, chocolatey and since it’s stone fruit season, I am using fresh cherries. You can also add in chocolate protein powder if that is a part of your diet – I’ve been using this plant-protein powder for a while and swear by it. You can also use cocoa powder and some dark chocolate only makes it even more decadent! A delicious way to start the day! Honestly? This one tastes SO much like dessert, I wouldn’t even go as far as to call it breakfast. 😛
Super excited to be sharing this one with you and cannot wait to see your recreations – seeing you try and enjoy the recipes I share truly warms my heart! 🙂 Send a picture, tag @thedancingcookbook and #thedancingcookbook whenever you try out this recipe. Bon Appetit!
Black Forest Overnight Oats
Decadent dark chocolate, creamy vanilla, fresh cherries - live your childhood as your experience these nostalgic flavors by the spoonful as you dig into these overnight oats. Can totally pass for dessert and such a yummy way to start your day - all while keeping it healthy!
Ingredients
- 1 cup Old-fashioned Oats
- 1.5 cup Milk (Regular/Plant-based)
- 3-4 Tbsp Cocoa Powder/Chocolate Protein Powder
- 2 Tbsp Dark Chocolate, roughly chopped
- 0.25 cup Fresh Cherries, pitted and sliced
Cherry Filling (Optional)
- 0.5 cup Fresh Cherries, pitted and sliced
- 1-2 Tbsp Lemon juice
- 1-2 Tbsp Maple Syrup
Creamy Vanilla Topping
- 0.25 cup Greek yogurt
- 1 Tbsp Maple Syrup
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
Instructions
- Combine the oats, milk, cocoa/protein powder and chocolate in a container and mix well. Refrigerate for 6-8 hours.
- In a separate container, mix the yogurt, maple syrup and vanilla extract for the topping. This can be prepared at night or the next morning.
- For an extra yummy cherry layer, prepare the cherry filling: in a small saucepan over medium heat, heat up the cherries until they cook down a little (~5 min). Add in the lemon juice and maple syrup and mix well. Allow to cool and store.
- Assembly: Layer the oats, followed by the cherry filling/fresh cherries in alternate layers in your jar/container of choice. Add the creamy vanilla yogurt on top. Garnish with cherries and grated/chopped chocolate.
Notes
- For a fuss-free version, you can simply combine everything for the oats with cherries and refrigerate for 6-8 hours. Prepare and add the creamy vanilla yogurt when ready to consume. Top with fresh cherries.
- I use this as an opportunity to maximize protein intake by adding in dark chocolate protein powder. You can totally use cocoa powder or any other chocolate per preference.
